Tiger Martial Arts Sanford teaches 100% authentic Taekwondo
Taekwondo
Taekwondo is the only Korean martial art recognized by both the South and North Korean governments. While there are many other Korean martial arts, none of them hold official government recognition like Taekwondo.
In 1978, various martial art styles in Korea were unified under the name Taekwondo. As Korean martial artists, we have long been taught to honor higher authority—whether it be our masters, parents, or country—and so we embraced this unification. The government’s decision to merge the different styles was rooted in the fact that they all shared the same origins and similar techniques. More importantly, the core value of Korean martial arts has never been solely about physical skill, which made this unification into Taekwondo a natural step.
At Tiger Martial Arts Sanford, we teach 100% authentic Taekwondo, backed by Master Chon’s 40+ years of experience, ranging from school-based training to special forces instruction.
hapkido
Hapkido is introduced as a self-defense component to Taekwondo training, but only to black belt students. This is because black belt students, having undergone years of training as color belts, have a deeper understanding of the foundational techniques.
Rather than focusing on teaching a large number of step-by-step techniques, we emphasize key concepts that students will internalize and never forget. These concepts include understanding the human body, force dynamics, reaction and counteraction, and the angles of approach. This deeper understanding enables black belt students to adapt and perform self-defense techniques in a variety of situations, making their training both versatile and effective.
Kumdo (Sword practice)
Kumdo is a traditional Korean swordsmanship practice once reserved for royalty. Historically, members of the royal class, who often led battles, were trained in both Taekwondo for hand-to-hand combat and Kumdo for weapon skills. This combination ensured they were well-rounded in all forms of combat.
Through Kumdo training, you will experience the discipline, strict rules, and etiquette that have been passed down through generations. It’s not just about learning sword techniques—Kumdo also instills a strong sense of respect and focus.
